On January 3, 2022, a Shiloh Shepherd named Tinsley proved that heroes come in all forms, sometimes with four paws and a wagging tail. Tinsley’s extraordinary actions saved two lives in the most miraculous way. The night began like any other, but it would soon unfold into a life-changing event for both her owner and his passenger.
While driving across Veterans Memorial Bridge on I-89, which connects New Hampshire and Vermont, drivers noticed a young dog running loose on the road. Her unusual behavior caught the attention of a nearby trooper, who tried to get closer to her. However, instead of running away, the dog, who would later be identified as Tinsley, took off in the direction of Vermont, as though she was trying to lead them somewhere. Her actions seemed intentional, as if she was guiding the trooper down the road. It was almost as though Tinsley was saying, “Follow me. Follow me.”
The trooper, trusting the dog’s instincts, followed her across the bridge and onto the highway, where Tinsley led him to a dangerous and damaged section of guardrail near the junction with Interstate 91. There, they discovered the wreckage of a badly damaged pickup truck that had rolled over. Upon inspecting the scene, officers found two men ejected from the vehicle, lying in the snow, their bodies battered and exposed to the freezing temperatures of the night. Both men, Cameron Laundry, 31, the driver, and Justin Connors, 40, the passenger, were severely injured and suffering from hypothermia, in addition to their injuries from the crash.
Standing nearby, Tinsley remained calm and watchful, never leaving her owner’s side. Police later confirmed that without Tinsley’s actions, it is highly likely that both men would have perished in the frigid temperatures that night. They would have been unable to survive much longer exposed to the elements without the quick intervention. Thanks to Tinsley’s quick thinking and determination to lead rescuers to the crash site, both Cameron and Justin were saved, and they were transported to safety.
Cameron Laundry, deeply moved by the events that transpired, referred to Tinsley as “my little guardian angel.” His words reflected the deep gratitude he felt toward his loyal dog, who had not only alerted the officers to the crash but had literally saved their lives by guiding them through the dangerous and desolate night. Lebanon Police Chief Phillip Roberts echoed the sentiment, stating that he had never seen a household pet play such a significant role in saving lives. Tragically, a bulldog that belonged to Justin Connors was also in the truck at the time of the crash.
