Midshipman Colin Magill, a 2026 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), has become a shining example of leadership, dedication, and service. A native of Center Moriches, New York, and an alumnus of Center Moriches High School, Colin’s journey to the academy was shaped by his early passion for maritime education and his unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world. His path to the academy was not an accident; it was a carefully considered and ambitious decision that would lead him to achieve remarkable feats, both in and outside of the classroom.
Colin’s nomination to the USMMA came through the recommendation of former Congressman and current EPA Administrator, Lee Zeldin, an endorsement that opened the door to a prestigious and demanding institution. Colin’s major, Maritime Logistics and Security, reflects his deep interest in the logistics of international trade and maritime operations, as well as the security of global shipping networks. His dedication to this field would soon lead him to some of the most pivotal moments in both his personal and professional life, moments that solidified his commitment to serving his country through the maritime industry.
One of the most unforgettable moments of Colin’s journey at the USMMA occurred when he traveled with the Mariners Choir to Normandy, France, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The significance of this trip was not lost on Colin, as it allowed him to connect with history in a deeply personal way. During this visit, he had the honor of being photographed on Omaha Beach alongside a former Rosie the Riveter and a Medal of Honor recipient, both of whom were part of the incredible legacy of World War II. The experience of standing on that historic site, surrounded by the stories of sacrifice, bravery, and heroism, left an indelible mark on Colin. It reminded him why he had chosen a path in maritime service and why it was important to preserve the stories of those who came before him.
While in Normandy, Colin also attended the opening of the first Merchant Marine Memorial at Utah Beach, another moment that would become a significant chapter in his journey. The opening ceremony was especially meaningful as it was attended by World War II Merchant Marine veterans Julian Hilts and Reynolds Tomter. The event was poignant, as the veterans were recognized for their exceptional service during the war and for their role in ensuring the freedom and safety of the seas. At this ceremony, they were honored with a blanket bearing the Congressional Gold Medal that they and their fellow veterans received in 2020 for their heroic actions. For Colin, this experience cemented his deep respect for the legacy of the Merchant Marine and the sacrifices made by those who served. Unfortunately, Reynolds Tomter, one of the veterans he met during the ceremony, passed away in 2025, making Colin’s encounter with him all the more significant.
Beyond his academic and professional achievements, Colin’s time at the USMMA has been marked by his extensive involvement in various extracurricular activities. He has been a dedicated member of several organizations, each of which has helped him develop leadership skills and a sense of camaraderie that will serve him well in his future career. Colin’s contributions to the Offshore Sailing Team and the Mariners Choir provided him with opportunities to travel and compete, honing his teamwork and leadership abilities in ways that academic work alone could not. He was also involved in the Men’s Volleyball Club, the USCG Auxiliary, the KP Brew Club, and the KP Dance Club. These activities gave him the chance to bond with his peers, share in their experiences, and learn the value of community service.
In addition to his extracurricular activities, Colin took on several leadership positions within the academy. He served as Band Company Flight Deck Platoon Commander, then transitioned to the role of Human Resources Officer, and later became a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Ambassador. These roles allowed Colin to hone his leadership and organizational skills, while also giving back to his fellow midshipmen by ensuring they had the support they needed in both their academic and personal lives. Colin’s dedication to making the academy a safe and supportive environment for all students earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and superiors alike.
During his Sea Year, Colin gained invaluable hands-on experience while sailing as a deck cadet aboard several notable vessels. He sailed aboard the USNS Waters (T-AGS 45), the USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4), the USCGC Venturous, the Maersk Kensington, the TV Kings Pointer, and the Liberty Pride. These experiences took him to various parts of the world, including Panama, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, Oman, UAE, Pakistan, India, Korea, Canada, and Japan. The opportunity to work aboard such diverse vessels in so many different locations gave Colin a comprehensive understanding of global maritime operations, further fueling his desire to serve in the maritime industry.
In addition to his work at sea, Colin interned with the Sandy Hook Pilots, gaining further exposure to the logistics and operations of the U.S. maritime industry. The experience gave him firsthand insight into the critical role that pilots play in navigating vessels through some of the busiest and most dangerous waters in the world. This internship further solidified his passion for maritime service and his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the shipping industry.
Upon graduation, Colin will serve as a U.S. Merchant Marine Unlimited Third Mate and Strategic Sealift Officer. His service will be a continuation of his dedication to ensuring the safety and efficiency of global maritime operations. The education and experiences he has gained at the USMMA have prepared him to take on the challenges of the maritime industry with confidence and expertise. Colin’s goal is not only to contribute to the maritime industry but also to serve his country through the U.S. Merchant Marine, which plays a critical role in national defense and global trade.
As Colin looks to the future, he remains committed to continuing his service to the nation and the maritime industry. His journey through the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy has been filled with challenges, triumphs, and personal growth. From his time in Normandy to his leadership roles at the academy and his experiences aboard various vessels, Colin has shown that he is ready to take on the responsibilities that come with being a U.S. Merchant Marine officer.
