Six Airmen Lose Lives in Tragic KC-135 Refueling Mission

Posted on March 17, 2026

Shannon and I, along with the entire National Guard family, find ourselves deeply mourning the loss of six brave airmen who served in the KC-135 refueling aircraft. These six individuals, three of whom were Ohio Air National Guardsmen assigned to the 121st Air Refueling Wing, and three from the active-duty 99th Air Refueling Squadron, a partner unit with the Alabama National Guard’s 117th Air Refueling Wing, have tragically lost their lives. This untimely tragedy has not only left a hole in the hearts of their families but has also affected the larger military community, as their sacrifice represents the very essence of heroism.

The loss is devastating, and each of these six airmen brought with them a unique set of skills, passion, and dedication to their roles in the Air National Guard and the active-duty Air Force. In the quiet moments of reflection that have followed the announcement, Shannon and I, like many, have been thinking about their families, their comrades, and the legacy they leave behind. The bravery these men and women displayed while serving their country will never be forgotten, and their sacrifices will continue to inspire those who follow in their footsteps.

Maj. John A. Klinner, Capt. Ariana G. Savino, Tech. Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt, Capt. Seth R. Koval, Capt. Curtis J. Angst, and Tech. Sgt. Tyler H. Simmons—these are the names of the fallen heroes who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their dedication to their mission, to their fellow airmen, and to the values they upheld is evident in every story shared, every memory cherished, and every tribute paid in their honor.

The KC-135, the aircraft that these airmen flew, has long been a staple of the Air Force’s air refueling capabilities. These men and women served in a critical capacity, ensuring that the planes that protect our skies, provide aid, and defend our nation were able to stay in the air longer, reach farther, and accomplish more. The refueling mission is a complex one, requiring impeccable precision and skill, and these airmen excelled in their duties. The work they did was not glamorous or easy; it was often performed in challenging conditions and required a dedication to teamwork and excellence that is second to none.

The loss of these six airmen has deeply impacted their comrades who worked alongside them. Their fellow airmen remember them not just as soldiers, but as people—individuals with families, hopes, and dreams. Maj. Klinner, Capt. Savino, Tech. Sgt. Pruitt, Capt. Koval, Capt. Angst, and Tech. Sgt. Simmons were more than just their military titles; they were friends, mentors, and leaders. They made a difference in the lives of those around them, and their legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing them.

In times of tragedy, it’s natural to feel a sense of helplessness. We can feel the weight of the loss and the void that is left behind. However, in the face of this pain, it’s also important to remember the ways in which these airmen lived. They lived with a commitment to their country, to their fellow service members, and to their families. They chose to serve, and in doing so, they gave everything they had to protect the freedoms we hold dear. Their lives were marked by bravery, and their final sacrifice is a reflection of the deep commitment they had to their mission.

As we mourn this loss, it’s essential to support the families and loved ones of these fallen heroes. Their grief is beyond comprehension, and it’s up to the rest of us to ensure they don’t have to endure it alone. The community of service members, veterans, and military families is a strong one, and in times like these, we come together to provide comfort, strength, and support. Shannon and I, along with countless others, extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of these six airmen. They are in our thoughts and prayers, and we pledge to honor their memories in every way possible.

The impact of this tragedy extends far beyond the immediate families and friends of these airmen. The loss of such dedicated individuals affects us all, as it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in our armed forces. Their bravery is not something to be taken lightly, and we must never forget the risks they take in order to keep our nation safe. These airmen gave everything for us, and we owe it to them to remember their contributions, to honor their memories, and to ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten.

The families of these fallen airmen now face a future without their loved ones, and as a community, it’s our responsibility to help them carry on. The pain they feel is unimaginable, but it’s important to know that they are not alone in their grief. We stand with them, we mourn with them, and we offer them the strength to face the days ahead. In the wake of this tragedy, we can take comfort in knowing that these six airmen will never be forgotten, and their legacy will live on through the lives of those they touched.

Maj. Klinner, Capt. Savino, Tech. Sgt. Pruitt, Capt. Koval, Capt. Angst, and Tech. Sgt. Simmons will forever be remembered as heroes. Their service, their dedication, and their sacrifice will inspire future generations of airmen. Their story is one of courage, sacrifice, and commitment to something greater than themselves. We are forever grateful for their service and will continue to honor them in everything we do.

In closing, Shannon and I, along with the entire National Guard family, will continue to keep the families of these fallen heroes in our hearts. We will never forget the incredible sacrifices these airmen made, and we will continue to carry their legacy forward. We stand with the families of Maj. John A. Klinner, Capt. Ariana G. Savino, Tech.
