Mexico vs England Match Sets New U.S. TV Viewership Record

Posted on July 9, 2026

MEXICO CITY: The thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash between Mexico and England has become the most-watched soccer match in U.S. television history.

According to preliminary figures, the match attracted a combined audience of 44.8 million viewers across the United States, surpassing the previous record of approximately 42 million viewers set by the U.S. vs. Belgium World Cup match.

The report said 23.2 million people watched the game on Telemundo, while 21.742 million tuned in via Fox.

The broadcast on Fox also became the most-watched English-language World Cup match in the United States that did not feature the U.S. national team. During the closing moments of the match, Fox’s audience peaked at 25.7 million viewers.

The high-intensity encounter, played at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, saw England secure victory despite playing with 10 men for part of the match.

The report added that these are preliminary figures, and the audience could increase further once Nielsen releases its final television ratings.
