Could Bleeding Gums Be a Warning Sign of Serious Kidney Disease?

Posted on July 5, 2026

A new study suggests that bleeding gums may be an early warning sign of serious kidney disease.

Researchers in Hamburg, Germany, analyzed the dental records of more than 6,000 people and found a strong link between gum disease and reduced kidney function.

The study revealed that only 14% of people with normal kidney function had severe gum disease. In contrast, more than 35% of those with moderately impaired kidney function were affected by severe gum disease.

According to experts, nearly one in every two adults in the UK suffers from some form of gum disease. Common symptoms include red or swollen gums and bleeding while brushing or flossing.

Gum disease is usually caused by poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque to build up on the teeth and trigger inflammation of the gums.

Researchers emphasized that the study does not prove that gum disease directly causes kidney disease. However, it does reveal a strong association between the two conditions.

The findings add to growing scientific evidence suggesting that oral health is closely linked to overall health, particularly kidney function.

Experts advise that anyone who experiences frequent bleeding gums, persistent swelling, or other symptoms should not only consult a dentist but also seek medical advice if necessary, as these signs could indicate an underlying health condition.
