A Colorado mother and a family friend now face serious criminal charges after a tragedy that has stunned the community.
The death of a 4-year-old boy has exposed a horrifying case of abuse disguised as discipline.
Authorities say the child endured repeated physical harm at the hands of a man entrusted with his care.
According to court documents, 23-year-old Destini Rose Lipsky placed her son in the custody of 24-year-old Alexander Martinez-Armstrong.
Lipsky reportedly considered Martinez-Armstrong like a brother and gave him permission to enforce strict punishments.
The punishments were described as “boot camp” style discipline aimed at correcting the child’s alleged behavioral issues.
Investigators say the boy had been accused of lying, sneaking into his mother’s purse, failing to obey, and sometimes taking candy.
Lipsky allegedly believed that placing her child under Martinez-Armstrong’s care was the solution to his misbehavior.

Emergency responders were called to an Aurora, Colorado, apartment around 10 p.m. on May 16.
They received reports that a young child was unconscious and not breathing.
When officers and paramedics arrived, they found the boy suffering from significant injuries covering much of his body.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the boy later died from the trauma he endured.
Court records reveal that Martinez-Armstrong forced the child to practice writing numbers while striking him with a belt.
The suspect’s girlfriend reportedly told investigators that she could hear the child’s screams echoing from the living room throughout the night.
Authorities allege that Lipsky authorized Martinez-Armstrong to whip, spank, and physically exhaust her son.
The punishments included push-ups, planks, wall-sits, and other physically demanding exercises.
Investigators note that similar methods of abuse had previously been inflicted on the child by his mother.
The affidavit states that before his death, the boy was covered in bruises “from head to toe.”
Investigators believe Martinez-Armstrong struck the child with a belt at least 21 times on the day of his death.
The repeated trauma left the child unable to survive the sustained abuse.
Martinez-Armstrong was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder.
Authorities say he admitted to striking the child during the night.
Lipsky was taken into custody the following day and charged with child abuse resulting in death.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death is ongoing.
Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the severity of the alleged abuse.
Many said they never suspected such cruelty could occur behind closed doors.
Community members are struggling to understand how a mother could place her own child in such a dangerous situation.
