Washington (IPS): The United States House of Representatives has passed a significant resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to launch unilateral military action against Iran.
According to U.S. media reports, the resolution was introduced by Democratic lawmakers and was approved by a narrow margin of 215 votes to 208. During the vote, four Republican members broke ranks with their party and supported the measure.
The resolution stipulates that any military action or declaration of war against Iran would require prior approval from Congress, preventing the administration from making such decisions independently.
Political analysts say the move reflects growing concern among U.S. lawmakers over Iran-related policy. The debate is no longer confined to the opposition, as some members of the ruling Republican Party have also expressed reservations about potential military escalation.
Several members of Congress argued that, under the U.S. Constitution, the authority to declare war or authorize military action primarily rests with the legislative branch. They emphasized that Congress cannot be sidelined in decisions involving armed conflict.
