In the United States, a car plunged into a deep ravine, but the driver’s life was saved thanks to his dog.
The dog traveled several miles to alert authorities about the accident.
According to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Brandon Garrett was driving along a remote U.S. Forest Service road on June 2 with his four dogs when his vehicle fell into a ravine.
Police said in a statement shared on social media that one of the dogs traveled nearly four miles and reached the location where the driver’s family was staying. The dog’s arrival alarmed the family, making them realize something was wrong.
The next day, the driver’s family found the vehicle and called emergency services, as they were unable to descend into the deep ravine themselves.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the driver about 100 yards (91 meters) away from the vehicle. Earlier, he had shouted loudly for help.
According to police, the driver managed to get out of the car after the crash.
U.S. Forest Service personnel used saws to clear bushes and vegetation to create a path for rescue teams.
Rescuers set up a complex rope system along one side of the ravine. Once they reached the injured man, they placed him on a stretcher and secured it to the ropes.
He was then pulled up with the help of the rope system and brought safely to the other side of the ravine. Images shared by the sheriff’s office showed a fast-flowing stream at the bottom.
Officials said he was later airlifted to a nearby hospital. The driver’s three other dogs were found alive at the crash site.
The police report stated that during the investigation, it was revealed that Garrett was traveling north on U.S. Forest Service Road 39 with his four dogs when, while taking a turn, his vehicle broke through a guardrail and plunged into the ravine.
“One of his dogs traveled nearly four miles to reach his residence, alerting people there that something had gone wrong. Garrett managed to move about 100 yards away from the vehicle, where he spent the night.”
“Others continued searching for him, and his family located the vehicle on the morning of June 3. The remaining three dogs were found alive at the scene.”
