How Did the U.S. Find Its Pilot Trapped in Iran?

Posted on April 7, 2026

Details have emerged of the complex rescue operation carried out to extract a crew member of the U.S. F-15E fighter jet that crashed in Iran, involving dozens of aircraft, Special Forces, and advanced technology.

A large-scale operation was launched to rescue a crew member of the F-15E that went down in Iran, involving hundreds of personnel and modern military assets.

Military expert and retired Major General Mark McCarley highlighted the sensitivity of the mission, explaining that the area where the plane crashed was extremely rugged and mountainous, making access extremely dangerous. The situation became even more critical when Iranian authorities announced a hefty reward for capturing the pilot.

According to General McCarley, the pilot was injured and had very limited food and water, while local people and Iranian forces were searching for him everywhere, tempted by the reward. In this situation, the pilot used the emergency signaling device he had, which continuously informed headquarters of his location, becoming a crucial factor in saving his life.

Reports indicate that the Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) hid on a high mountain away from the wreckage after the crash and activated the emergency beacon, which allowed his location to be identified.

U.S. security analyst Jim Shotwell revealed, citing sources, that the missing pilot had contacted the U.S. military from enemy territory on Friday afternoon. Following this contact, preparations for the rescue operation were intensified, but the pilot’s injuries made extracting him extremely challenging.

He said that during the mission, U.S. aircraft flew at very low altitudes in search of the pilot, exposing them to a high risk of ground attacks. Despite this, U.S. commandos and the Air Force coordinated successfully to complete the mission.

According to U.S. media, the rescue mission involved dozens of aircraft, with special commando forces and heavy air corps support. The operation utilized helicopters, fighter jets, and cyber, space, and intelligence capabilities.

Reports indicate that U.S. planes targeted Iranian convoys to prevent them from approaching the wounded crew member’s location.

During this time, there were unconfirmed reports of ground skirmishes.

According to The New York Times and Fox News, some U.S. aircraft had to be destroyed during the operation, including two transport planes that got stuck at a remote Iranian base.

The reports state that the injured crew member remained in hiding for over 36 hours to avoid capture before being safely extracted, though his condition is said to be critical.

Fox News reports that several U.S. personnel were also injured during the rescue, and the entire mission is being described as extremely complex and dangerous.

Retired Australian Major General Mac Ryan said that such a complex operation is something few other militaries in the world could execute.

According to him, as soon as the crash was confirmed, the U.S. Air Force and Special Forces began emergency planning.

General Mac Ryan added that although flying in Iranian airspace was dangerous, Iran’s defense system had weakened significantly due to a month-long ongoing conflict, which benefited the U.S. team.

He noted that of over 10,000 flights so far, this was the first fighter jet to crash, demonstrating U.S. air superiority. This operation was not just the retrieval of a soldier, but also a major demonstration of U.S. military power.
