Mother and Baby Found Dead in Brisbane Home After Chilling Discovery

Posted on March 23, 2026

A peaceful suburban neighborhood south of Brisbane has been left in shock after a heartbreaking and disturbing incident inside a family home claimed the lives of a dedicated schoolteacher and her infant daughter.

Authorities reported that 38-year-old Kate Paterson and her one-year-old child, April, were discovered with fatal stab injuries at their home in Belivah on Thursday morning. The tragic discovery came only after police were initially called to a nearby road, where a severely injured man had been struck by a vehicle.

What first appeared to be a routine traffic incident quickly unfolded into a far more serious and complex investigation.

Emergency services were alerted around 7:30 a.m. following reports of a man with a serious neck injury being hit by a car near a Woolworths store on Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road in Bannockburn.

Witnesses said the man, later identified as 39-year-old Blake Seers, was seen running along the road moments before he was hit by a ute.

He was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition, where he remains unconscious under police supervision.

At that point, authorities believed they were dealing with a pedestrian accident.

However, the situation took a grim turn soon after.

Police traveled a short distance—around 300 meters—from the crash site to a nearby residence in Belivah to inform the man’s family.

Upon entering the home, officers made a devastating discovery.

Inside, they found the lifeless bodies of Kate Paterson and her young daughter, both suffering from fatal injuries consistent with a knife attack.

Detective Superintendent Chris Ahearn later confirmed that all three individuals lived at the same address.

Investigators also identified a trail of blood leading from the house to the road where the man had been struck, suggesting he had left the home after sustaining injuries.

According to early findings, the man may have fled the property shortly before the collision occurred.

Police are now working to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

“We have witness accounts placing him running from the residence just before the crash,” Ahearn said during a media briefing.

“There are also indications he had already suffered injuries when he was seen on the street.”

Authorities say forensic analysis and medical assessments will be key in establishing what exactly happened.

For now, investigators are waiting for the injured man to regain consciousness so they can question him.

“He is someone we urgently need to speak to,” Ahearn added.

Crime scene teams spent hours examining both the home and the nearby roadway, as stunned neighbors looked on.

Two separate crime scenes were established—one at the Belivah residence and another at the location of the collision.

Residents of the usually quiet area reported hearing screams earlier that morning.

One neighbor said the sounds appeared to come from the direction of the house shortly before emergency crews arrived.

Others described a heavy police presence soon after, with multiple vehicles securing the area.

Roads in the vicinity were closed for several hours while officers collected evidence and inspected the damaged vehicle involved in the crash.

Police also addressed speculation circulating online, confirming there was no indication that firearms were involved.

“The injuries we’ve observed are consistent with a sharp-edged weapon,” Ahearn clarified.

“There is nothing to suggest the use of a gun.”

The incident has deeply shaken the local community, particularly those connected to Kate Paterson’s work as a teacher.

She was a Year 5 educator at Windaroo State School, where staff and students are now struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Friends described her as a caring teacher devoted to her students and a loving mother to her young daughter.

Photos shared on social media show a smiling woman whose life centered around family and education—now tragically cut short.

Police also noted that there were no prior records of domestic violence linked to the household, adding further uncertainty to the case.

“We are still working through all aspects of this incident,” Ahearn said.

“No conclusions will be drawn until the investigation is complete.”

Authorities are appealing to anyone who was in the area between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday to come forward with any information or video footage that may assist the investigation.

For now, the Belivah community remains quiet—but deeply unsettled.

Behind the police lines stands a home that once housed a young family.

Now, it has become the center of a tragedy that has left a mother and child dead, a man in hospital, and an entire community searching for answers to what really happened that morning.
