A 42-year-old British woman has revealed her extraordinary medical ordeal, which doctors believe was linked to a trip she took to India in 2007.
Lauri Denman, from Wales, first experienced an unusual incident in 2010 when she noticed a worm nearly one meter long after using the bathroom.
She consulted doctors and underwent routine medical tests, which came back normal. As a result, she did not consider the incident serious. However, she later began suffering from persistent and severe headaches that significantly affected her daily life.
In 2011, she experienced her first epileptic seizure. The episode was so severe that she struggled to speak, and when she regained consciousness, she found herself inside an ambulance.
After undergoing CT and MRI scans, doctors discovered 38 larvae in her brain. Initially, they suspected she had toxoplasmosis, but further examinations confirmed that she was suffering from neurocysticercosis.
Medical experts explained that the disease occurs when eggs of the pork tapeworm enter the human body and travel to organs such as the brain, where they develop into larvae and form cysts.
Denman spent nearly two weeks in hospital, where she was treated with antiparasitic medications and steroids. Although the treatment was effective, she developed severe brain inflammation several years later, forcing her to leave her job and move in with her father.
Following years of treatment and rehabilitation, her condition improved significantly. All of the larvae in her brain had died and broken down naturally, eliminating the need for surgery.
She was eventually discharged from the hospital and continued recovering at home. She has not experienced another epileptic seizure since 2017, although doctors have advised her to take anti-seizure medication for the rest of her life as a precaution.
Denman said the powerful side effects of long-term steroid treatment changed her physical appearance and left her battling severe depression, anxiety, and mental confusion.
Her physician, Dr. Brendan Healy, said he has encountered only one case like this throughout his medical career. He noted that neurocysticercosis is extremely rare in the United Kingdom and is usually seen in people who have traveled to countries where pork tapeworm infections are more common.
After recovering, Denman told British media that she had spent three months in India in 2007. During the trip, she tried to avoid eating meat to reduce the risk of food poisoning but did consume some dishes containing pork.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), neurocysticercosis can develop when pork tapeworm eggs enter the body through contaminated food or water, poor sanitation, or contact with infected material. Health experts recommend proper hand hygiene, drinking safe water, and thoroughly cooking meat to reduce the risk of infection.
Denman said she now hopes to use her painful experience to raise awareness about this rare but potentially dangerous disease and encourage others to take the necessary preventive precautions.
