Why Brushing Before Your Morning Coffee Is Better for Your Teeth

Posted on July 5, 2026

If you’re someone who wakes up and immediately brews a cup of coffee—much like the character Charlie Harper from the sitcom Two and a Half Men—you may unknowingly be putting your teeth at risk.

According to U.S.-based dentist Dr. Mark Burhenne, the best routine is to brush your teeth before drinking your morning coffee, as this can significantly reduce the chances of staining and enamel damage.

Dr. Burhenne explained that coffee has a pH level of around 5, making it acidic enough to temporarily soften the outer protective layer of the teeth, known as enamel.

He warned that brushing immediately after drinking coffee does not actually help clean your teeth. Instead, it may wear away the softened enamel, causing long-term damage.

“Brushing right after coffee is like scrubbing away the surface of your teeth,” he said.

The dentist noted that enamel typically takes 30 to 40 minutes to re-harden after exposure to acidic drinks. Brushing during this period can weaken the enamel even further, making teeth more vulnerable to discoloration and wear.

He added that this is one reason why some people notice their teeth becoming more yellow over time, even if they brush twice a day.

Dr. Burhenne also pointed out that drinking coffee before brushing allows the overnight buildup of bacteria, known as biofilm, to trap coffee and milk particles more easily, increasing the risk of stains.

For those who are used to brushing only after coffee, he suggested a few simple alternatives. Rinsing with MCT oil before drinking coffee may help reduce biofilm, while sipping water alongside your coffee can lower acidity.

His final advice is straightforward: wait at least 30 to 40 minutes after finishing your coffee before brushing your teeth. This small change to your daily routine can help protect your enamel and keep your teeth healthier for years to come.
