What Does Drooling During Sleep Really Mean? Scientists Say It Could Be a Good Sign

Posted on June 29, 2026

Many people feel embarrassed if they wake up to find saliva on their pillow after sleeping. However, scientists say there is no need to worry—in fact, it may be a positive sign of healthy sleep.

According to sleep experts, people who enjoy deep, restful sleep and experience positive dreams are more likely to drool during the night. This happens because the body becomes fully relaxed, allowing saliva to escape naturally from the mouth.

Experts explain that drooling during sleep often indicates that a person has successfully reached and completed the deeper stages of sleep, including the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase, without significant interruptions. This suggests that the body and brain are benefiting from high-quality, restorative sleep.

In contrast, specialists note that people who never drool while sleeping are more likely to report sleep-related problems. They may not be getting enough sleep or may struggle to achieve the deep, uninterrupted rest needed for proper physical and mental recovery.

While occasional drooling is generally considered normal and can be associated with healthy sleep, excessive or sudden drooling—especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, loud snoring, or breathing problems—should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, as it could indicate an underlying medical condition.
