(Part 2) He Filled a Cave With Wool and Firewood —…

Posted on June 21, 2026

Part 2: The Test of Winter
The storm arrived with a ferocity that left Pine Hollow Basin buried under a thick blanket of snow. Thaddeus Mercer and his daughter Evelyn settled into their cave, the warmth from the stove creating a stark contrast to the howling winds outside. The temperatures plummeted, reaching bone-chilling lows, but inside, they remained safe and secure.

The first night was a revelation. Thaddeus stoked the fire, watching as the flames danced and flickered, sending warmth radiating through the cave. He glanced at the thermometer hanging near the sleeping platform, which read a comfortable 53 degrees. Evelyn, wrapped in Clara’s red-striped blanket, slept soundly, her breath visible in the cool air but not chilled by it.

As the storm raged on, Thaddeus knew they had entered a new phase of their winter survival. The cave had proven itself a capable shelter, but he understood that the real test lay ahead. The winds howled, and snow piled against the vestibule, but the inner sanctum of their cave remained undisturbed.

Days turned into weeks, and the harsh winter continued to assert its dominance over the basin. Thaddeus meticulously maintained the fire, ensuring that they had enough wood stored away from the cold ground. He monitored the water basin, which remained unfrozen, and made notes in his ledger, tracking temperatures and firewood consumption.

Outside, the world was a frozen wasteland. Families who had once felt secure in their cabins now struggled as their firewood supplies dwindled. Thaddeus heard the whispers of concern as neighbors began rationing their fuel, their homes struggling to keep the cold at bay. He felt a pang of sympathy for them but also a sense of determination that their preparations had put them in a different position.

One evening, as the temperature dipped to -24 degrees, Thaddeus noticed something unusual. Ranger, their loyal hound, began to act strangely. Instead of resting beneath the platform, he wandered to the vestibule, scratching at the wall near the stovepipe. Thaddeus’s instincts kicked in; something felt amiss. He quickly donned his coat and crawled through the narrow entrance, prepared to face the storm.

The wind hit him like a wall, and visibility was reduced to mere feet. Thaddeus struggled against the elements, using a shovel to clear the air intake and ensure the cave could breathe. The snow had piled high, threatening to suffocate their sanctuary. Every movement was a battle, but he pressed on, determined to protect Evelyn and their home.

When he finally returned to the warmth of the cave, his heart raced. Evelyn had wrapped the safety rope around her wrist, a precaution she had taken without his prompting. They had learned to rely on each other, and in that moment, Thaddeus felt a surge of pride. She was growing into a resilient young woman, one who understood the importance of preparation and vigilance.

As the storm continued, the cave held firm. The wool curtains trapped pockets of still air, while the stone walls retained heat. Thaddeus marveled at how their makeshift home functioned as a cohesive system, each element working together to create a sanctuary amid the chaos outside.

But the winter was relentless. The storms came in waves, each one more brutal than the last. Thaddeus kept a close eye on their supplies, rationing food and firewood carefully. He knew that every decision mattered, that the difference between survival and hardship lay in the details.

News of their winter in the cave began to spread through Pine Hollow Basin. Silas Boone, the rancher who had once expressed skepticism, decided to see for himself. He climbed the slope, battling through the snow to reach the cave. When he entered, he was greeted by the sight of Evelyn reading a book, the warmth of the stove enveloping them both.

Silas inspected the cave with a critical eye, noting the absence of moisture and the way the fire burned steadily. He asked Thaddeus how much wood they had consumed, and Thaddeus handed him the ledger filled with meticulous notes. Silas nodded, impressed by the results.
