In Sahiwal district of Pakistan, the tireless efforts of a pet dog digging through a burnt garbage dump forced villagers and the Okara Bangla police to solve the mystery of the brutal murder of agricultural worker Umar Hayat.
According to the report, after investigation, police found the victim’s wife, Shamim, and her brother Fida Hussain guilty of his murder, disfiguring his face, and dumping his body in a nearby garbage heap. The sibling killers had set Umar’s body on fire in an attempt to hide their crime.
Police arrested both suspects on Monday and named them in the case registered on February 18.
The murder took place in a village in Tehsil Chichawatni. On February 18, a pet dog pulled out Umar’s feet from a burnt garbage pile, alerting villagers and landowner Nadeem Abbas Shah, at whose farmhouse Umar worked.
According to the report, village resident Syed Bilal Nawaz called the police emergency helpline (15) after seeing human feet in the burnt garbage. Villagers had already seen the pet dog digging through the pile.
Okara Bangla police reached the scene and recovered a severely burned and unidentifiable body from the garbage.
Based on villagers’ information and further investigation, police traced Umar Hayat’s last residence at Nadeem Abbas Shah’s farmhouse.
Umar, also known as “Multani,” had been working at the farmhouse for the past two years with his wife Shamim and four children. Umar was originally from Multan, while Shamim was from Khanewal. They had been married for 15 years and had four children.
A few days before the body was found, Nadeem Abbas Shah had informed police that Umar and his family had left their job and returned to their hometown in Jahanian, Khanewal.
On February 18, police registered a murder case against unknown persons. Before the burial, police contacted Umar’s mother in Multan to confirm whether any family member was missing. She said her son had disappeared from the farmhouse. When police showed her the feet recovered from the garbage, she initially denied that they were her son’s. Shamim also refused to identify them.
However, police questioned both families about why Umar’s disappearance had not been reported.
For verification, DNA samples were taken from Umar’s mother and the deceased. A few days later, Umar’s mother called police and identified the remains as her son’s.
Further investigation revealed that Shamim had claimed she left the farmhouse with Umar and the children on February 12. However, inquiries in village 157/10-R showed that Shamim had arrived there alone with her children and her brother Fida Hussain, without Umar.
Further investigation also revealed alleged relations between Umar and his wife Shamim.
Shamim confessed that Umar had confronted her about the matter a week before his murder, which led to a violent argument. In revenge, she called her brother Fida Hussain, and together they killed Umar. They disfigured his face with an iron rod and bricks, moved the body to a garbage dump, and set it on fire to destroy evidence.
SHO Shehzad Ahmed confirmed that the victim’s widow Shamim and Fida Hussain have been arrested and the case has been completed for trial.
