When Did Dogs Become Loyal to Humans? Surprising Scientific Revelations

Posted on January 24, 2026

The bond between humans and dogs is far older than many might imagine. Long before modern civilization, when humans lived in caves and relied on hunting for survival, they needed a trustworthy companion. It was during this early period that dogs entered human life, forming a unique and enduring partnership.

Dog loyalty is widely recognized across cultures. Known as one of the most faithful companions to humans, dogs have repeatedly proven their devotion—standing by their owners in difficult times and, in some documented cases, even sacrificing their lives in loyalty to humans.

According to researchers, the friendship between humans and dogs dates back nearly 12,000 years. This conclusion is based on the scientific analysis of dog bones discovered in the US state of Alaska and other archaeological sites. Findings suggest that during this period, dogs had already begun relying on humans for food and survival.

Researchers from the University of Arizona state that the relationship between Native American populations and dogs is far older than previously believed. A research paper published in the journal Science Advances, based on archaeological evidence from Alaskan sites, confirms that human–dog companionship stretches back thousands of years.

Assistant Professor François Lanoë of the University of Arizona noted that throughout history, dogs have remained closely connected with humans, actively supporting them in survival and food-gathering activities. The new research challenges earlier assumptions and reveals evidence from several regions showing that dogs have lived alongside humans since the earliest stages of human society.

The findings reinforce the idea that the human–dog bond is not merely emotional, but deeply rooted in shared survival, cooperation, and mutual dependence over thousands of years.
